Tenure-Track Faculty Position in Oceanographic Engineering
Department of Ocean and Resource Engineering
University of Hawai‘i at Mnoa

The Department of Ocean and Resources Engineering (ORE) in the School of Ocean and Earth Science and Technology (SOEST) at the University of Hawaii at Manoa (UHM) invites applications for a full-time, tenure-track, 9-month faculty position in Oceanographic Engineering at the rank of Assistant Professor.

Hawaii’s unique location, climate, and marine-oriented activities make UHM an ideal place for education and research in ocean and resources engineering. Educational and research emphasis in ORE includes coastal, offshore, ocean resources, and oceanographic engineering. With this position, we are excited to grow our expertise in oceanographic engineering, which involves the design, operation, and maintenance of the mechanical, electrical, and computing technology and instrumentation that supports oceanographic and marine operations.

The successful candidate will have research and field experience related to oceanographic engineering. We welcome applicants with strong backgrounds in the classical engineering disciplines (mechanical, electrical, civil, computer, acoustical, chemical, etc.) that are coupled with an understanding of application to the ocean environment. Research areas include sensor and instrument development, fixed and mobile sensor network infrastructure, marine technology, algorithms/methods for use in ocean environments, and other related topics.

UHM is the only recognized Native Hawaiian-serving R1 university and draws students from a diverse population including Hawaiian, Pacific Islander, and Asian ethnicities. Requirements

Position duties:
– Develop and sustain an extramurally funded research program
– Teach graduate and undergraduate courses
– Mentor and support students and postdoctoral researchers
– Publish in peer-reviewed journals and in other fora as appropriate
– Serve the department, school, university, and scientific and professional communities

Required qualifications:
– A doctorate (at the time of appointment) from a college or university of recognized standing and in a field relevant to the position
– Demonstrated ability as a teacher
– Demonstrated scholarly achievement
– Poise and good address for meeting and conferring with others
– Excellent communication skills
– Demonstrated capacity for creative, high-quality research
– Experience with the development and/or use of oceanographic instrumentation, integration of instruments onto vehicle platforms, fixed and mobile sensor network infrastructure, ocean/marine technology, or related topics

Desirable qualifications:
– Established extramurally funded projects and/or prior success in securing extramural funding
– Licensure as a Professional Engineer
– Practical and/or professional experience related to ocean/marine technology and engineering
– Experience collecting oceanographic data in the field or on research vessel cruises
– Demonstrated action aimed at fostering an inclusive, respectful, equitable, inclusive and welcoming work environment
