Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL) is a multidisciplinary research institution engaged in science and engineering on behalf of national security. We are seeking a Science/Engineering Project Leader at Level 1 or Level 2 to manage complex technical initiatives that drive innovation and deliver impactful results. This is a regular, onsite role in Los Alamos, NM, with salary ranges as follows:
Responsibilities for Science/Engineering Project Leader 1:
Develop and execute project plans, work breakdown structures, and work packages for scientific or engineering initiatives
Lead small project teams and coordinate work assignments to ensure project deliverables are completed within scope, schedule, and budget
Apply project management principles to organize and manage project activities while maintaining alignment with laboratory priorities
Monitor project performance, identify potential risks, and implement mitigation strategies to maintain progress
Serve as a liaison between project teams, program managers, and laboratory leadership, communicating project status and outcomes
Ensure compliance with safety and security protocols within the laboratory environment
Additional Responsibilities for Science/Engineering Project Leader 2:
Independently manage moderately complex scientific or engineering projects with limited direction
Lead mid-sized project teams with diverse technical backgrounds and coordinate cross-functional collaboration
Negotiate resources and project requirements directly with program and line managers
Develop advanced project plans and integrate project execution with broader laboratory strategies and commitments
Serve as the primary spokesperson for projects, reporting status, risks, and outcomes to program managers and senior laboratory leadership
Qualifications
Science/Engineering Project Leader 1:
Bachelor’s degree in a science or engineering related field from an accredited institution and 2+ years of directly related experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience
Knowledge of scientific or engineering principles relevant to project management and demonstrated ability to develop project plans, work breakdown structures, and work packages
Experience managing project scope, schedule, and budget, and ability to lead small teams to achieve project objectives
Strong interpersonal and communication skills with the ability to build relationships with stakeholders at all levels
Understanding of laboratory safety and security protocols
Science/Engineering Project Leader 2:
Bachelor’s degree in a science or engineering related field from an accredited institution and 5+ years of directly related experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience (advanced degree typically expected)
Advanced knowledge of project management methodologies and change control processes and demonstrated ability to independently manage moderately complex scientific or engineering projects
Experience leading mid-sized technical teams with diverse backgrounds
Proven ability to negotiate resources and requirements with program and line managers, and ability to identify project risks and implement effective mitigation strategies
Strong communication skills with the ability to present technical project information to leadership and stakeholders
Desired Qualifications:
Master’s or PhD in a relevant scientific or engineering discipline
Project Management Professional (PMP) certification
Experience working in a national laboratory or federal research environment
Knowledge of Department of Energy (DOE) project management requirements
Experience with project management software tools
Active DOE security clearance or ability to obtain one
Demonstrated success managing projects with multi-million-dollar budgets
Experience integrating project work with regulatory compliance requirements
