JOB TITLE: Engineering Technician II
DEPARTMENT/DIVISION: Municipal Services
REPORTS TO: Municipal Services
SUMMARY OF FUNCTION:
Participate in and perform engineering work involving responsibility for independent application of technical knowledge and skill to engineering problems in the field or office. Act as a member of a survey team and construction inspector of municipal engineering projects. Perform drafting and assist in engineering design work. Act on behalf of the Engineering Technician in his or her absence and perform related work as required.
ESSENTIAL TASKS:
Participate in the preparation of layout work required for the paving of streets, alleys, sidewalks, parking lots and related structures.
Participate in the running of levels, lines and setting of grades for sidewalks, streets, alleys sewer mains, and water mains.
Inspect the work of contractors on municipal construction projects and enforce adherence to plans and specifications.
Be familiar with the operation of surveying and engineering equipment as required.
Participate in the performance of preliminary surveys for such engineering projects as streets, alleys, sewer and water mains, buildings, and other public improvements.
Respond to citizen complaints and concerns regarding streets, sewers, sidewalks and the water system. Ensure that appropriate action is taken.
Assist in the preparation of plans for municipal engineering projects.
Assist in the writing of specifications and contract documents for the construction of municipal engineering projects.
Be familiar with AutoCad computer aided design/ drafting software and perform miscellaneous drafting as required.
Make blueprints, draw maps, plans and sketches from field notes and preliminary sketches.
Generate and maintain accurate engineering records and reports.
Perform other duties as assigned.
Requirements
KNOWLEDGE SKILLS AND ABILITES
Associates Degree in Civil Engineering Technology from an accredited college or university, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
Knowledge of methods and techniques applied to Civil Engineering construction and maintenance of public projects.
Knowledge of practices and procedures used in land surveying.
Knowledge of mathematical principles and the ability to perform accurate engineering and surveying computations.
Two years of experience in Civil Engineering work preferred to include surveying, drafting and construction inspection.
Experience using AutoCad computer aided design/drafting software
Ability to assemble, prepare and maintain correspondence, records, and reports.
Ability to communicate with and work effectively with the public.
Ability to review plans for compliance with city specifications and requirements.
Ability to work extended hours as needed.
Proficiency in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint)
SPECIAL WORKING CONDITIONS
Working in areas under construction.
Field conditions which consist of unpaved sites, muddy, dusty areas and potential dangerous environment.
