Duties: Under general supervision, performs a wide range of legal work, such as drafting and reviewing all legal documents and prosecuting/defending the District in court and before various administrative bodies.
Salary/Pay Plans
The salary listed above is Step 1 in a structured pay plan. At 6 months of employment with the District, the salary will increase to Step 2: $141,049.48. At 18 months, the salary will increase to Step 3: $148,497.96. There are 9 total steps for TAM 18 of the pay plan (view full pay plan). These increases are based on service time in the job classification and require a 'Meets Standard' performance rating.
Requirements
Original Entrance - Examination
Absolute Requirements: Admission to the Illinois Bar and the General Bar for the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of Illinois.
Minimum Requirements: Graduation from an accredited law school with a Juris Doctor degree and two years of experience in the general practice of law.
Examination: The examination will consist of a training and experience evaluation (T&E), weighted 60%, and a written performance test, weighted 40%. Candidates must achieve a passing score on each test to be eligible to compete in each subsequent test and to have their names placed on the eligible list.
The T&E will assess candidates’ knowledge, skill, and abilities in various legal practice areas such as litigation, employment law, environmental law, contracts and real estate; transactional legal matters and legal counseling; legal problem solving; interpreting and applying governmental and administrative law; and interpreting legal documents, legal writing and research.
The written performance test will assess candidates’ knowledge, skill and ability in areas such as those listed above and written communication.
Examination Process: All applicants will be advised by email if they have been admitted to the examination process. Applicants who do not receive a response to their application by Monday, March 23, 2026 should contact the Employee Selection Office at (312) 751-5100.
T&E: Each candidate whose application is approved, will be emailed a link which will contain the T&E form for completion and return to the Employee Selection Office as specified in the T&E instructions.
WRITTEN PERFORMANCE TEST: Candidates who pass the T&E will be informed by email regarding the date, time and place of the written performance test.
Original Entrance - Appointments
Appointments will be made from an eligible list with three categories: A (Exceptionally Well Qualified), B (Well Qualified) and C (Qualified). Candidates in the highest category will be given first consideration for appointment. The eligible list has a duration of three years. Appointment is subject to successfully passing a physical examination, a drug test and a criminal history background investigation.
